Alaska’s Only Eco-Tourism Certification Program Continues to Recognize Businesses

Anchorage, AK – Since 2009 Adventure Green Alaska (AGA), the state’s only eco-tourism certification program, has quietly continued to promote businesses offering more sustainable or “green” experiences in Alaska.
Today, AGA recognizes the first round of renewed businesses. The AGA program includes three levels of certification, including Gold, Silver and Bronze levels. AGA certification is valid for two years. The four re-certified businesses are:
  • Alaska Alpine Adventures (www.alaskaalpineadventures.com)
  • Alaska Wildland Adventures (www.alaskawildland.com)
  • Discovery Voyages (www.discoveryvoyages.com)
  • Kodiak Treks (www.kodiaktreks.com)
“AGA’s focus is to promote Alaska tourism businesses using green practices and to encourage other business owners to do the same,” says Sarah Leonard, AGA Board President. “We are proud to recognize these businesses for their continued leadership in Alaska’s ecotourism industry.”
Launched in 2008, AGA is the only such voluntary ecotourism certification program of its kind in Alaska and only one of two state-based programs in the country. AGA certifies tourism businesses that meet specified standards of economic, social and environmental sustainability.

“One of our goals in developing this program is to recognize that eco-friendly tourism businesses can be both financially and environmentally sustainable,” says Deb Hickok, another AGA Board member and President and CEO of the Fairbanks Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“We have slowly and consistently grown over the last three years. We continue to hear from more and more businesses from around the state interested in what AGA is all about,” said Leonard.
Adventure Green Alaska accepts applications year-round. The AGA application and other related information is found at www.adventuregreenalaska.org
